Nurses Without Borders Initiative (NWBI), an international NGO that is committed to the progress of global health has conferred the prestigious honour of Climate Change Advocacy Award on the Chairman of the Delta State Oil Producing Areas Development Commission (DESOPADEC), Olorogun and former Delta State Commissioner for Environment, Hon. Barr. John Obukowho Nani.

The epoch-making award ceremony which was presented to the DESOPADEC chairman, took place at the sideline of the just-concluded 28th session of the conference of Parties(COP28) of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change held in Expo City, Dubai, United Arab Emirate.

It would be recalled that Olorogun Barr. John Nani, as Delta State Commissioner of Environment from 2015-2019, Hon. Barr. Nani laid a solid foundation on flood control across the state, a situation that prevented environmental disaster which affected other states of the federation. Blocked drainages were opened, silted waterways were de-silted and illegal structures on water channels were opened across the state.

As chairman of DESOPADEC, Hon. Nani has replicated his environmental achievement in different mandate areas of the Commission. This, perhaps, and many more impact he has made on the environment and climate change, have attracted world attention, hence the recent award.

Nani, along with other notable individuals, were honoured with the international award in recognition of his exceptional dedication and pivotal role in spearheading global climate change campaign and for his groundbreaking efforts towards laying the groundwork for the Climate Change mitigation initiatives and marking a significant milestone in the fight against climate crisis in Delta State.

While receiving the award, Barr. Nani expressed his profound gratitude to Nurses Across Boarders for the acknowledgment and emphasized that collective effort is needed to combat climate change.

He noted the vital role of healthcare workers and professionals in addressing environmental challenges, highlighting the intersectionality of health and the environment in safeguarding communities.

Nani dedicated the award to the Government and People of Delta State led by His Excellency, Rt Hon Sheriff Oborevwori and the immediate past Governor of Delta State, His Excellency, Sen. Dr. Ifeanyi Arthur Okowa who appointed him as Hon. Commissioner for Environment in 2015, and for supporting all the initiatives and programmes of the ministry during his tenure.

“This recognition of my little efforts by Nurses Across Borders validates the critical role that every individual can play in effecting the needed positive change and galvanizing global initiatives toward environmental remediation and sustainability.” He stated

Earlier, The President of Nurses Across Borders, Pastor P. O Omoragbon in his speech stated that the group is an esteemed international organization renowned for its commitment to healthcare and environmental advocacy, adding that the award on Chief Nani is in recognition of his remarkable contributions which has resonated on a global scale, earning admiration for his relentless pursuit of environmental conservation and sustainable practices.

“Acknowledging the urgency and gravity of the climate related issues, Barr. Nani’s leadership and advocacy resonated profoundly, inspiring action and fostering meaningful discourse on mitigating the adverse effects of climate change. His pivotal role in laying the groundwork for an Environmental proactive Delta State stands as a testament to his visionary leadership and unwavering commitment to fostering a sustainable future”, Omoragbon noted.

Several other personalities from across the globe were also honoured by the international NGO at the event which was attended by international delegates and climate change activists.
