Against the backdrop of the increasing insecurity in the State at the moment, the government through the Directorate of Transportation, has set in motion the process of registering operators of commercial tricycles and motorcycles, for ease of identification, security and safety of both passengers and the operators of this means of movement.
It would be recalled that crime wave has increased in the State in recent time, and it has been linked to those using tricycles and motorbikes for commercial transportation. There have been cases of kidnapping, armed robbery, cultism and even raped perpetrated by the operators of these means of movement. Passengers and sometimes, even the operators themselves become victims.
However, addressing newsmen in Effurun last weekend, a Consultant to the Directorate of Transportation in the State, Dr. Julius Babogha, stressed on the importance of the use of tricycles and motorcycles as means of mobility in this hard economic condition.
Dr. Babogha however noted that hoodlums and criminals have taken advantage of the situation, to commit heinous crime against innocent Deltans.
According to him, it is this worrisome development that has prompted the State government to seek for measures to minimize the current scourge.
“Passengers are daily being kidnapped and some killed. We also talked about the safety of the riders who are also attacked and their tricycles snatched. So, the government cannot overlook this.
“Therefore, government must do something to minimize the degree or rate of this occurrences. That is why we now come in to advice government as consultants in a PPP that we should have a Database of all tricycle riders and all motorcyclists. That will help to reduce the number of kidnap cases and other crimes”, he said.
Dr. Babogha disclosed that the process of data capturing of all the tricycle and motorcycle riders will involve they visiting Vehicle Inspection Officers’ offices to register with the government.
“Tricycle riders and motorcycle riders will come to VIO’s offices in the State to register with the government.
“Our staff who will form the task for e are already in training on what and what not to do. Registration has started skeletally but we are still in the process of sensitization.
“We will verify the information you give to us and thereafter we will ask you to come for data capturing. We capture you and give you ID card and tag”, he said.
