Senator representing Delta Central Senatorial District, Okakuro Ede Dafinone, is set to hold the second edition of Urhobo Language Competition in furtherance of his commitment towards reviving the Urhobo language which many believe is going into extinction.
In a statement he issued recently, the Distinguished Senator noted that there was need to continue the programme in the interest of preserving the Urhobo language now and for posterity as well as sustaining it in memory of the initiator, late Senator Pius Akpor Ewherido.
Dafinone disclosed that the competition is open to all Urhobo-speaking students, ranging from Primary 1 pupils to university students up to the 500-level, adding that “the wide eligibility range is intended to encourage participation across various age groups and educational levels.”
It was gathered that registration for the competition is currently ongoing, stating that interested participants are encouraged to register online via the official link: https://tinyurl.com/edeurhobo25.
“I am honoured to sponsor the second edition of the Urhobo Language Competition this year, held in memory of the late Distinguished Senator Pius Ewherido.
“The competition is a vibrant platform for showcasing linguistic talent and cultural pride among Urhobo youths.
“This initiative is designed to inspire the younger generation to embrace, preserve, and sustain the Urhobo language through active participation in both writing and speech”, the statement noted.
It would be recalled that the Urhobo Language Competition was first introduced in 2012 by the late Senator Pius Akpor Ewherido as part of his efforts to promote the Urhobo language among younger generations.
Senator Dafinone has however kept the programme alive through his sponsorship of the annual event which has attracted the interest and commitment of the youth towards cultural preservation as well as youth engagement.
Indeed, his involvement has breathed new life into the initiative, ensuring that the legacy of Senator Ewherido continues to remain evergreen in Urhobo subconsciousness.
