As preparations are underway for the inauguration of the next phase of grassroots health intervention in Delta Central Senator Ede Dafinone has charged the second cohort of the National Health Fellows Programme to focus more on the health affairs of the grassroots.
Dafinone gave the charge when the Fellows paid him a courtesy visit on February 16, 2026 to intimate the Senator with their preparation and implementation outlook for communities in Delta Central Senatorial District.
The National Health Fellows Programme is a preventive health initiative aimed at strengthening primary healthcare systems by equipping young professionals with skills in community mobilisation, health education, leadership and evidence-based interventions.
Its broader mission is to reduce avoidable illnesses by prioritising early detection and public awareness at the community level.
During the engagement, Senator Dafinone revisited the strides recorded by the first batch of fellows, whose outreach centred on tackling hypertension and diabetes—two silent but increasingly prevalent conditions.
Through free screenings and sustained sensitization campaigns, the initial cohort expanded access to basic health checks and encouraged early medical intervention.
In several communities, residents reportedly underwent blood pressure and blood sugar tests for the first time. Beyond screenings, the fellows facilitated referrals and supported access to essential medications, helping to bridge gaps between underserved populations and existing health services.
With non-communicable diseases on the rise nationwide, preventive models such as this have become critical. Health stakeholders have consistently warned that late diagnosis of hypertension and diabetes contributes significantly to complications such as stroke, kidney damage and heart disease.
Community-based education, experts note, remains one of the most cost-effective strategies for reversing this trend.
Addressing the new fellows, Dafinone underscored the importance of discipline, innovation and measurable impact. He noted that their selection followed a highly competitive process, describing it as evidence of their capacity to lead and deliver results at the grassroots.
As the inauguration approaches, expectations are high that the new cohort will consolidate past gains while expanding outreach efforts to reach more vulnerable populations.
