Against the backdrop of seeming slow advancement of the Urhobo nation in recent times, Senator Ede Dafinone representing Delta Central Senatorial District in the National Assembly, has charged the newly-elected executive of the Urhobo Progress Union, UPU, to take the gauntlet towards fostering unity, peace and cohesion without which development will continue to elude the area.
It would be recalled that the Olorogun Ese Gam-led executive of the UPU was re-elected for a second term in office on Friday December 5, 2025 at the UPU headquarters, Uvwiamuge.
Dafinone who gave this charge on the occasion of the 94th Urhobo Day Celebration of the UPU at Uvwiamuge, Agbarho, Ughelli North LGA, urged the new executive to work hard towards reviving and strengthening the unity and cohesion that once characterized the Urhobo nation.
The Senator further charged the new executive of the body to “strengthen bonds among Urhobos, foster harmony, and drive initiatives that will uplift the socio-cultural and developmental landscape of the area.He noted that unity remains the bedrock upon which the Urhobo Nation can achieve lasting growth and prosperity.”
Harping on this year’s celebration with theme of “Awaken Urhobo Spirit for Unity’, Dafinone congratulated the new UPU Executive, urging the body not to betray the confidence reposed on them by the people.
Dafinone pledged his unalloyed commitment to the UPU as an organ and symbol of Urhobo leadership, stating that the culture of the people is their identity. He stressed on the importance of the Urhobo language, further charging the UPU to take decisive steps to revive it before it goes extinct.
