*Says admissions into colleges of Nursing, midwifery schools strictly on merit

Director of Delta State Colleges of Nursing Services, Mrs. Gloria Igumbor, has assured that the government is committed to the upgrade of infrastructure at the three Colleges of Nursing Sciences and the two Schools of Midwifery in the State.

Igumbor who disclosed this in her office at Asaba while fielding questions from newsmen recently, stressed that the state government is poised to upgrade facilities in the health care sector, adding that provisions of more classrooms in the three Colleges of Nursing Sciences in the State is a top priority of the government.

It would be recalled that of all the 36 states in the federation including the FCT, Delta State is the only one with three independent state-owned Colleges of Nursing Sciences and two Schools of Midwifery. Other States have one College of Nursing Sciences each.

Explaining how the state became so privileged to have more than one College if Nursing Sciences, Mrs. Igumber applauded the combined efforts of former governor of the state, Senator Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa, the incumbent governor (Speaker of the DTHA as he then was), Rt. Hon. Oborevwori and, under her leadership at the helm of affairs of Nursing Services in the State, as being responsible for the feat.

“It is the efforts and foresight of the Delta State Government through this office that made it possible and more efforts will be made by the Government of Rt. Hon Sheriff Oborewori to do more with his M.O.R.E agenda to build more classroom facilities across the Nursing Colleges and Schools of Midwifery in the State”, she said.

According to her, the approval by the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria of three Colleges of Nursing Sciences in the State involved high level politics by Dr. Okowa, Rt. Hon. Obirevwori and her office, pointing out that “it has increased index numbers from 30 to about 100 and above in admitting students into the colleges of Nursing and Midwifery across the State.”

The Director of Nursing Services used the occasion to condemn those who have been taking advantage of the social media to attack her office with frivolous allegations, saying that “no student or parent should pay money for the admission of students into the 3 Colleges of Nursing and 2 schools of Midwifery in the State.”

Igumbor described as “blackmail and despicable how some unscrupulous persons resort to use her name to defraud innocent unsuspecting parents and students”, adding that “a lot of have been arrested and confessional statements obtained from them indicated they have been using her name to commit crime.”

While advising parents and students who are so desperate for admission into the colleges and schools from falling prey to fraudsters, Mrs. Igumbor promised to track, arrest and prosecute those who are found wanting both internally and outside these institutions.
