Delta Police, Judicial Officers Collaborate To Enforce Traffic Laws, Prosecute 68 Offenders

Against the backdrop of the recent increase in violation of traffic laws and regulations a trend which is becoming a source of concern for the Delta State government, the Delta State Police Command, in collaboration with seven (7) designated Judges and Magistrates of Mobile Courts across the State, have intensified compliance, enforcement and prosecution of offenders.

In a press release signed by the Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, of the Delta State Police Command, Edafe Bright, a Superintendent of Police, the Command disclosed that the current synergy between the police and Judicial Officers was a part of a sustained strategy to promote compliance of traffic regulations to ensure safety and security across the State.

“These efforts are part of a broader strategy to promote compliance with traffic laws and ensure the safety and security of all residents of the state.

“A total of sixty-eight (68) offenders were successfully prosecuted at the State Mobile Courts in Warri and Asaba, as well as at the Magistrate Court, Okwe”, he disclosed.

According to the PPRO, the traffic offenders who were recently apprehended violated several traffic offences and they were charged and prosecuted.

“The offenders were apprehended for a range of traffic infractions. Seven (7) individuals were charged for unauthorized use of number plates, five (5) for driving against traffic, fifteen (15) for driving without registration numbers, two (2) for illegitimate use of sirens and revolving lights, fifteen (15) for obstruction on the roads.

Others who charged include thirteen (13) for driving with covered number plates, and eleven (11) for driving without valid driver’s licenses”, he further disclosed.

The PPRO who noted that criminals oftentimes use vehicles without registration numbers covered plate numbers to perpetrate crimes, also disclosed that caught and prosecuted were fined various sums in line with the provisions of the State Traffic Management Laws and other relevant national laws.

“It is noteworthy that vehicles with unregistered or covered number plates are often used to commit offences and evade security checks at various checkpoints.

“All offenders were fined in accordance with the provisions of the Delta State Traffic Management Law and the National Road Traffic Regulations, reinforcing the consequences of violating traffic laws.

“The Delta State Police Command is deepening collaboration with the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and the Delta State Traffic Management Agency (DESTMA) to clamp down on traffic offenders and enhance overall security across the State.

“These partnerships aim to ensure coordinated enforcement, reduce traffic-related incidents, and strengthen public safety on Delta State roads”, he noted.

The Police Spokesperson however urged all road users to comply with traffic regulations, including possession of valid driving licenses while on the road, adding that the Delta State Police Command will not tolerate traffic rules violations as it carries out its duty of protection of lives and maintaining law and order.

“The Command urges all road users to comply with traffic regulations, ensure vehicles are properly registered, and carry valid driving licenses at all times. The Delta State Police Command remains committed to a zero-tolerance approach toward traffic violations and will continue to take decisive action to safeguard lives and maintain order on the State’s roads”, he concluded.
